Creating a Flexible Workspace in 2023

Having a comfortable and accommodating workspace is an essential part of any business. If your employees are happy and feel accommodated, they will likely do better quality work. As of 2023, we are seeing a shift in the way that offices are set up and run in an effort to make them work better for the employees. These innovative new offices are being referred to as flexible office spaces.

We are the Martinez Team, South Florida’s commercial real estate experts, and we helped many businesses find the perfect flexible office space to accommodate their workforce. In this article, we want to further discuss the latest trends for flexible workspaces to keep you up to date with the industry and perhaps give you some ideas for your own company.

What are Flexible Office Spaces?

A flexible office space is a lively and adaptive workplace that gives employees more freedom and more options for how they do their jobs. Workers are given more control for how they do their own jobs, allowing them to be more comfortable and engaged in the work they are doing.

What Does a Flexible Workspace Look Like?

Here’s what it doesn’t look like: nameplates on doors and desks, cubicles, timecard punch clock, a single break room, a basic kitchen, boring décor, and few amenities.

Here’s what it does look like: human-centric spaces that give a sense of community and teamwork, high quality kitchens, bold colors and sharp designs, modern décor and furniture, coworking space for desks or meeting rooms, advanced AI features, and amenities such as a fitness room or resting and relaxing areas.

Why are Flexible Offices Trending?

While flexible office spaces existed in 2019 and for years before that, they were not too common. Most office spaces still fell under the umbrella of a “typical” office, with designated seating areas, desks, offices, etc. When the pandemic hit at the end of Q1 in 2020, however, the world didn’t know how much it was about to change. Offices were shut down globally, some for weeks or even months. Fortunately, with the advancement of technology many companies that had once operated out of offices were able to regroup and begin working remotely.

But, as 2020 rolled into 2021 and then into 2022, offices were opening back up again. Well, some were, and other businesses remained fully remote. Or they were going to go back to the office. On second thought they were going to stay remote…well which is it??

Unfortunately, a lot of businesses were left pondering that same dilemma: stay remote even though offices are safe again, or go back to the office even though we proved we can do the work remotely?

Many businesses came to the same solution: design and implement a flexible office space.

What is Trending for Flexible Offices?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to designing a flexible workspace, because the needs of every workforce are different. However, these are some of the things that have been trending in 2023:

  • The option to still work hybrid or fully remotely
  • Bold and vibrant designs that feel modern
  • An emphasis on sustainability
  • Culture-building within a company
  • Rest areas and fitness & wellness areas
  • Open floor-plans
  • Advanced technology and AI resources
  • Standing desks, high-top seating, and other comfortable furniture

If you want to create a more flexible workplace for your employees, ask them what their needs are. You can design yours in whatever way works best for your business, your budget, and your employees. Plus, if you need a new office you can always work with a commercial real estate expert to help you find a new, accommodating office.
